How someone can "conclude" that Christmas day is a holiday that celebrates Canada's past is beyond me. I'll give them New Year's Day, but only by a narrow margin. I personally like the idea of a Prime Minister's Day. But only if that "day" is a celebration of our first Prime Minister. His views, beliefs, and ideas represented what this country should have been and could have been. But to think that a general "Prime Minister's Day" could theoretically be used to celebrate the "reign" of Jean Chretien makes me ill. Why would anyone want to celebrate such a national embarrassment/tragedy.

If we must have a holiday it should not be associated with all P.M.'s. I still shudder when B. Mulroney's name is mentioned. It brings back bad memories of the G.S.T. and him passing it into law and appointing Conservatives into the Senate so it would pass there also. The naming of this holiday also mirrors the U.S. Presidents' Day holiday, and is just a step closer to them. John A. Macdonald day I could agree to. But why not have that day for July 1st and just have Valentines' Day as a holiday in Feb for all the young and old of Canada. I think this would be a more personal touch and something unique for our country.

Although I do not have any great objection to this proposal and I agree with it in principal, I do have concerns which I would like addressed. As a Newfoundlander, I feel that if Canada creates a "Prime Ministers' Day" Newfoundland's heritage and unique history will be forgotten. Newfoundland is the only province in Canada that once had the honour and privilege of being its own country, free and separate from Canada. Therefore, Newfoundland has its own political history and had its own Prime Ministers such as Whiteway, Bond, and Alderdice. I take great pride in knowing this to be true and celebrate this fact. I fear that if a "Prime Ministers' Day" is created by Canada and if Canadians, including Newfoundlanders, are required to celebrate this Day, Canada will once again forget Newfoundland's heritage. Canada has chipped away at Newfoundland's history in the past and still continues doing so. Among other things, Canada has imposed "Canada Day" onto Newfoundland's Day of Remembrance, Canada created Nunavut on Newfoundland's 50th Anniversary of Confederation, and Canada celebrates June 24th as Quebec's holiday and not Newfoundland's National holiday. Canadian history is not Newfoundland history. So, I encourage Canada to pay special attention to the provinces, especially Newfoundland, and their political histories if Canada decides to create a "Prime Ministers' Day."
