EDMONTON -- Jennifer Button of Waterloo, Ont., completed a gold-medal sweep in the butterfly events with a national record in the 100-metre race yesterday at the Canadian Open swimming meet.
Button's time of 58.93 seconds eclipsed the previous mark of 59.10 set by Marilyn Chiang of Montreal in 2000. Audrey Lacroix of Montreal was second in 59.36 and Jennifer Fratesi of Waterloo was third in 1:00.93.
"I was a bit surprised to get the record," said Button, who also holds the 200 butterfly short course and 100 butterfly long course national records.
Button then won her fifth gold as she helped the Region of Waterloo club set its second Canadian record in two days with a victory in the 4 X 50 medley relay. The winning time was 1:53.34, which beat the 1:54.20 set by Montreal's CAMO Club in 2000.
Marianne Limpert of Montreal won her seventh gold medal by tying for first in the women's 200 freestyle with Laura Nicholls of Waterloo in 1:59.61.
Three other swimmers added a third gold in individual events yesterday. Chad Thomsen of Edmonton swept gold in all three breaststroke events including yesterday's 100-metre race. Rick Say of Calgary added the 200 freestyle title to his wins in the 400 and 800 freestyle. Brian Johns of Vancouver won the 400 individual medley to go along with wins in the 200 IM and the 200 butterfly.
"To win all three is quite a big deal for me and to do it at home is even more amazing," Thomsen said. "The crowd support was fantastic."
Capturing their second golds were Mike Mintenko of Vancouver in the 100 butterfly, Lauren Van Oosten of Calgary in the 100 breaststroke and 14-year-old Britanny Reimer of Surrey, B.C., in the 1,500 freestyle.
Other winners yesterday were Liz Warden of Toronto in the women's 400 IM and Richard Cormack of Calgary in the men's 1,500 freestyle.
