Cardinal Law's conservatism was as harmful as his scandals
Fate finally caught up with Cardinal Bernard Law, who resigned as archbishop of Boston last Friday.The significance of this resignation extends way beyond his assumption of personal responsibility for the denial and cover-up of sexual abuse in the Archdiocese of Boston. Cardinal Law, once touted as a possible successor to John Paul II, has been one of the principal architects of the conservative revival within the Catholic Church, a close personal adviser to the Pope, and the Eminence grise of the U.S. Catholic Bishops Conference.
