An ignorant audience is no excuse for bad art

The literary world may be less hermetic than that of the visual arts, but it faces the same questions of audience and judgment. I have felt the same frustration at reviews by uneducated boors who clearly haven't a great interest in literary form or history, or (more commonly) reviews by would-be gossip columnists that are more personal attacks than literary discussions.
