Bridging Martha's salad days

"I want to focus on my salad." With those words, lifestyle diva Martha Stewart uttered the most amusing transition of the new century.There's no more valuable item in our language tool box than the transition or "bridging" statement. It's meant to convey conversationalists out of potentially damaging exchanges and into verbal safe houses, where they can quickly regroup and respond. But with no serviceable transition at her disposal, Ms. Stewart was left bereft of oral lodgings. She had no place to go.
