We're young and we're ready. So listen up

The Globe's New Canada series has painted a portrait of the next generation's civic values that may alarm some older readers. As writer Michael Valpy reports, young Canadians are passionate about issues that affect their future, and the future of this country, and are willing to commit the time and energy needed to make a difference. But many more young Canadians are choosing to make their mark through non-traditional channels -- "redefining civic engagement" in a way that does not include conventional forms of participation. Just 21 per cent of Canadians in their 20s marked their ballots in the last federal election.
