Vigilance still needed on drug patent laws
The battle that never ends pits the demand for cheap drugs against the demand for rewards by the drug inventors. The inventors usually win, which explains why the pharmaceuticals companies with their patented medicines are among the most valuable enterprises on the planet. This week, the demand side scored a victory when Ottawa said it would allow poor countries to import cheap drugs to fight the AIDS crisis.
