Detox: the new wave in deprivation
Carla Pindera is anticipating two subtle tweaks to her sense of well-being this weekend: She will feel less irritable. And she will visit the bathroom more often.The Winnipeg nurse and street-health worker is five days into a two-week detoxification program that has her swallowing licorice root, psyllium husks, black walnut extract, red clover and other herbal ingredients daily. She's also eating like a Buddhist monk -- eschewing alcohol, dairy products, red meat, refined foods and caffeine in favour of brown rice, fresh, in-season produce and litres of filtered water.
