Putin's power politics

On Saturday, Russia's Federal Security Service forces detained wealthy oil magnate Mikhail Khodorkovsky on 10 charges, including tax evasion and theft of state property.Many Russian and foreign observers believe that the administration of Vladimir Putin has targeted Mr. Khodorkovsky because of his public support for liberal opposition parties in the December Duma elections. If that were true, it could be seen as an unfortunate yet isolated incidence of overzealous election-season politicking. It is not. Rather, Mr. Khodorkovsky's arrest is just the latest example of a creeping authoritarianism in Russia that threatens the political and economic reforms of the past decade.
