Copyright bill passes

An amended version of the so-called "Lucy Maud Montgomery provision" has been passed by a vote in the House of Commons.MPs approved third and final reading Tuesday of Bill C-36, a piece of legislation ostensibly designed to amalgamate the National Library and the Archives of Canada that became a source of controversy when the Liberal government inserted clauses that would have extended the copyright held by the estates of dead writers on their charges' unpublished works until well into the 21st century.
