Don't cry wolf on every flu

Fear of new infectious diseases has become a recurring theme in our daily news; this week, this newspaper reported that bird flu could kill as many as 58,000 Canadians. I'm concerned that we may be distracted from the really important public-health issues. Let's put these new diseases in some perspective.
