The new filmed version of The Crucible, Arthur Miller's 1953 play, is filled with enough of the devil's kindling to set lustful hearts aflame. Bare-breasted teen-aged girls in the wood drink blood and invoke Satan's name. The fair Winona Ryder, as the hot little Puritan, Abigail Williams, with her cheeks ruddy, nostrils flared and eyes aglow, stares at the farmer John Proctor (Daniel Day-Lewis) the way a starving mastiff might regard a Gainesburger.
