Latin America's red trickle

Is a red tide sweeping over South America?Brazil has just elected a socialist and former labour leader as president. Venezuela is in the midst of something called a Bolivarian revolution that has produced, among other things, violent clashes between lower and upper classes. In Bolivia, a leader of humble coca-leaf growers came a surprising second in this year's presidential vote. In Ecuador, a leftist army colonel who helped mount a coup d'état could become the next president after an election this month.
