Red carpet upstages the show
God, that was long. And I'm with Joan Rivers on this one: "Who wins, who loses? Who gives a damn!" Every year it becomes more clear: As a TV show, the Academy Awards are about the frocks, not the films. By the time the first award is handed out, it's an anticlimax. The festival of frocks and the tricky business of bosomy actresses keeping their ta-tas intact -- all featured in competing red-carpet coverage -- have become the highlight. Ratings for the Academy Awards have been declining steadily in the past years. But red-carpet coverage keeps growing. Even CNN was in on it this year.
