Pickering Islamic centre target of arson, graffiti

A fire intentionally set at an Islamic centre early yesterday morning renewed fears that the rash of recent hate crimes shows no signs of abating.The fire at the Al-Mahdi Islamic Centre in Pickering was put out shortly after 3 a.m. and caused $5,000 in damage to the outside of the building. Inside the entrance, "Jesus Rules" was spray-painted across a bookcase, Sergeant Paul Malik of Durham Regional Police said. Tables were destroyed and chairs thrown outside in what Ejaz Haider, vice-president of the centre, said seemed to be a preplanned act. "Well, of course we're angry, but we're not afraid," he said.
