When one is tortured, many are wounded
The profession of arms has been called "using man's best to do man's worst" -- yet wars are intrinsically bound up with the growth of civilization. Happily, through the centuries of violence, societies have developed rules of war in an attempt to bring order and perhaps even honour and humanity to warfare. Aimed at controlling the use of violence and at protecting weak and vulnerable persons during armed conflicts, these rules incorporate international law, such as the Geneva Conventions, and the values of the civilized world. Professional armies are expected to adhere to these rules of war.
