On Arab TV, Bush assails abuse in Iraq

WASHINGTON -- U.S. President George W. Bush appealed yesterday for understanding from Arabs over the Iraqi prisoner-abuse scandal, but carefully avoided a specific apology for behaviour he called "abhorrent." Seeking to curb the growing damage to his political standing at home and America's reputation abroad, Mr. Bush took the extraordinary step of appearing on two Arab television networks to confront the allegations of abuse.
