The Bachelorette makes her choice

Canadian Press

The 29-year-old investment banker from New York City emerged as the winner Wednesday night on the finale of The Bachelorette he accepted a rose from the star of the reality dating show, 30-year-old Meredith Phillips.

"Will you?" Ian Hicks said as he got down on bended knee and held out a diamond engagement ring.

"Yes, yes," Meredith replied as he wriggled the ring onto her finger.

The pair professed their love for each other, and even though Ian said he hadn't planned to propose when he entered the dating game, he said he had to trust his instincts.

"It's going to work," he said.

Earlier, Meredith had broken up with runner-up Matthew Hickl, who admitted to being broken-hearted.

The first instalment of The Bachelorette, featuring Trista Rehn, also ended with an engagement and she later married her beau Ryan Sutter in a televised ceremony that attracted 17-million viewers.
