Debate: Harper won, and will winJune 15For me, Conservative Leader Stephen Harper won the debate. He was polite, reasonable and never lost his cool. His explanations about party policy and direction were crisp and clear. He appears to be made of the right stuff to become Prime Minister of our country. Liberal Leader Paul Martin repeated the same old set answers through out the debate. He appeared tired and defensive about the party's 10 year record. He refused to provide clear answers to most questions and often changed the subject when the going got tough. He appears unable to make the transition from finance minister to Prime Minister so he lost the debate. NDP Leader Jack Layton made a concerted effort to be the most positive. He chirped like a happy bird in springtime. He gave us simple answers to complex problems and the expected party position on the universe. He was the only leader who enjoyed himself and had a swell time. He loves being in the limelight trading punches with the other leaders. Bloc Leader Gilles Duceppe was a pleasant surprise to me. He was the most focused and asked excellent questions concerning the Liberal government. He was logical, honest and direct. He talked the least but said the most with an economical use of words in his second language. He crucified Paul Martin over the Sponsorship scandal with pointed, persistent questions. His performance was first-rate and will gain him votes on June 28. No leader spoke about policies or programs to help seniors. Since seniors do vote and are a fast growing group I believe leaders missed the boat. Based on his debate performance it appears Stephen Harper will be elected and form the next government after June 28. However, after listening to the debate for two hours, I have not changed my mind on how I plan to vote but we still have two weeks to go. |
