This weekend, the focus of activity for World Youth Day shifts to the area around Downsview Park, where both Allen Road and long stretches of Sheppard and Wilson Avenues will be closed to traffic today and tomorrow.
Lanes of Dufferin Street and Finch Avenue will also be restricted.
Police warn there will be severe traffic congestion near Downsview and urge everyone to use public transit.
Major highways around the metropolitan Toronto area will see heavier traffic than normal because hundreds of thousands of people are expected to attend the papal mass scheduled for 9:30 a.m. tomorrow.
Parking lots near the park are closed for use by buses. Car parking is limited to those who reserve a space, for $25, at www.eventparking.com.
Those who take the subway can walk from the Yorkdale, Wilson and Downsview stations. There will also be a fleet of shuttle buses providing continuous service from the Sheppard station on the Yonge line.
Subway service begins at 4 a.m. and will run with rush-hour frequency throughout the day.
For information on roads and transit, see the city Web site, www.city.toronto.on.ca and click on World Youth Day.
